Major social media platforms faced restrictions in Türkiye on Wednesday after a deadly attack on the headquarters of Turkish aerospace and defense company TUSAS in Ankara.
The shutdown of social media platforms, including X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok, came shortly after terrorists stormed the company’s headquarters, killing five people and wounding more than 20 people in the attack, Mirror UK reported.
Taking to its X account, NetBlocks, a global internet observatory that monitors cybersecurity and digital governance, announced the shutdown of social media platforms in the country.
“Confirmed: Live metrics show that social media platforms including X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok have been restricted in #Turkey,” NetBlocks wrote in a post on X.
The incident comes at a time when the authorities are imposing a ban on broadcasting due to the deadly attack that occurred today on the headquarters of the Turkish Aerospace Industries Company in Ankara.
Meanwhile, it is not clear when the ban on social media platforms in Türkiye will be lifted.
Eyewitnesses said that the large explosion was followed by a wave of gunfire.
A huge column of smoke can be seen rising into the air, and images also show significant damage to a number of buildings outside the complex.
According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the two attackers – a man and a woman – were killed in the attack.
While Yerlikaya did not identify those responsible for the attack, Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Guler pointed the finger of blame at the extremist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
