South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said on Wednesday that he will move to lift the declaration of martial law that he imposed a few hours ago, in respect of the parliamentary vote against this measure.
Yoon declared martial law on Tuesday to thwart “anti-state forces” among his opponents. But angry lawmakers rejected the decree, as demonstrators gathered outside parliament in the biggest political crisis the country has seen in decades.
Yoon’s surprise announcement, which he described as targeting his political rivals, was voted unanimously by 190 lawmakers in Parliament. Under South Korean law, the president must lift martial law immediately if Parliament requests it by a majority vote. His party urged him to lift the decree.
