The FBI has reported that a shooting near former U.S. President Donald Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, appears to be an attempted assassination. Trump, who is currently a Republican presidential candidate, was golfing near his Mar-a-Lago residence when gunshots were fired in the vicinity.
In a statement, Trump’s campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung confirmed that the former president is safe but provided no additional details.
While some reports suggested that the shooting may have been a dispute between two individuals near the golf course, concerns for Trump’s safety have been heightened, especially after an earlier incident two months ago in which Trump was wounded in the ear when a gunman opened fire during a rally in Pennsylvania.
Following that Pennsylvania shooting, the U.S. Secret Service, responsible for protecting high-profile figures, faced scrutiny, leading to the resignation of the agency’s head and the placement of at least five agents on administrative leave. Further investigations are ongoing.
