Beyoncé fans are in for a surprise when Yale University announced a new course focusing on the singer and her famous legacy.
According to the Yale Daily News, freshmen will “dive deep” into this Beyoncé Makes History: The Black Radical Tradition History, Culture, Theory, and Politics Through musicIt is a course led by African American Studies and Music Professor Daphne Brooks.
The professor, who specializes in black cultural studies, revealed that this is the best time to teach about the singer’s unprecedented contributions to American culture.
“This seems like a good class to teach because (Beyoncé) is very mature to teach at this moment in time,” Daphne told the outlet.
“The number of achievements and innovations she implemented and the way she blended history with politics – there is no one like her,” the professor said.
Daphne shared that this is one of her first courses focusing solely on Beyoncé.
“I hope that no matter what discipline you pursue in the liberal arts at Yale, by looking at culture through Beyoncé, it can invite us to think about how much art can express the world we live in and nourish our souls,” the professor explained. “We have space.” “To imagine better worlds and the ethics of freedom.”
Interestingly, Daphne pointed out that the session focused on the singer’s development, starting with her 2013 album and ending with her 2024 album.
Not just her music, the professor added, the course will also explore the complex representation of black women in both media and politics.
