Some Social Security beneficiaries will receive two checks in November thanks to a quirk of the calendar.
Recipients of Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, which provides benefits to low- and no-income Americans who have little means and are blind, disabled or 65 or older, will receive their November payment on Friday and will receive their “December” benefit. November 29.
This does not change the schedule for recipients of other Social Security benefits, such as retirement benefits.
About 7.4 million Americans receive SSI either alone or in combination with Social Security benefits, according to the latest data from the Social Security Administration. The average monthly SSI payment is about $697, although the average is higher for younger recipients.
When will SSI be released in November 2024?
SSI payments are usually sent out on the first day of each month, but the situation changes when the first day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday. In such cases, SSA issues payment checks on the previous business day. Since December 1st falls on a Sunday this year, that means SSI recipients will receive their December check two days earlier, on November 29th.
However, this does not mean that recipients will be left without a payment in December. Because New Year’s is a holiday, January benefits to SSI beneficiaries will be paid on December 31.
During the first two months of 2025, SSI payments will also be delayed due to the calendar. As noted, recipients will receive their “January” benefits at the end of December; their February checks will arrive on January 31st because February 1st is a Saturday. Since February only has 28 days, this process will repeat the following month. SSI beneficiaries will receive their March checks on February 28th.
The calendar corresponds to the payment schedule in March. SSI recipients will not receive a check at all this month, and their April benefits will arrive on April 1.
Social Security payment schedule for November
Americans receiving Social Security And SSI benefits, as well as people who started receiving Social Security payments before May 1997, will receive their payments on Friday.
Other Social Security recipients can expect to receive their payments in November on their normal schedule: If your birthday falls between the first and 10th of the month, your payment is due on November 13; if it is between the 11th and 20th, then it will be November 20th; if this happens later (that is, from the 21st to the 31st), your payment will arrive on November 27th.
