This week, Amazon announced that Prime members can get a 10-cent discount per gallon of gas at approximately 7,000 bp, Amoco and APM stations. The company estimates that this could result in annual fuel savings of approximately $70 based on each fill-up at a participating gas station.
While Prime is best known for offering free two-day shipping, the e-commerce giant has been adding more bells and whistles to the program in recent years that have nothing to do with delivery—like a new gas bonus.
Amazon has partnered with the Earnify app to offer the discount. To take advantage of the benefits, Prime members need to create an Earnify account and link it to their Amazon Prime account. The Earify app displays nearby participating gas stations. Prime members receive a discount by entering their phone number or payment method associated with Amazon, or by entering gas station and gas station numbers in the app.
EV drivers will have to be a little more patient. Amazon says it is developing a charging discount program with electric vehicle charging network bp, which it plans to launch next year.
When Amazon launched Prime in 2005, the program cost $79 a year and introduced America to the idea of “free” two-day shipping.
In 2014, Amazon raised the price of Prime for the first time, increasing the annual subscription to $99. Its last increase, which brought its current price to $139, occurred in 2022. (Amazon also offers monthly Prime subscriptions for $14.99.)
To keep customers from grumbling or canceling their subscriptions, Amazon turned Prime into a full-fledged discount program, adding Prime Video and Amazon Music streaming, pharmacy and healthcare services, among other things. Last year, the company included a free DoorDash DashPass subscription; the company expanded its food delivery network this year by offering Prime members a free subscription to Grubhub+.
Amazon has also upped the ante on delivery speed as it pioneered the e-commerce revolution by promising two-day delivery. Amazon now offers same-day or same-day delivery for millions of items.
While gas is a new frontier for Amazon, archrival Walmart is offering gas discounts to members of its Walmart+ program starting in 2020. Two years ago, the company expanded the program to include about 13,000 gas stations.
It’s a timely gain: The national average price of regular gasoline was $3.13 per gallon on Monday, according to GasBuddy. While that represents a decline of about 6 cents from a month earlier and about 40 cents from a year ago, families hit by years of elevated inflation will likely welcome any reprieve they can get, especially as More companies, including Amazon, are implementing refunds. – office attendance mandates, which will once again burden more people with the cost of daily commuting.
