Kamala Harris said on Tuesday that America was “absolutely” prepared to elect its first female president, but she downplayed the importance of her historic attempt, saying she simply wanted to turn the page on a nation “exhausted” by Donald Trump.
With two weeks until Election Day, Harris and Trump are saturating swing states with caucuses and taking to the airwaves and podcasts in search of an edge in a race that polls suggest is virtually tied.
He speaks at the national level nbc Network, Harris responded “absolutely” when asked if America was ready to elect its first woman — but she also noted that her candidacy was about “turning the page.”
“People are tired of Donald Trump and his approach, because it’s all about himself,” she said.
Speaking to his supporters in North Carolina, Trump had a very different message.
“This election is a choice between whether we will have four more years of incompetence, failure and disaster, or whether we will begin the greatest four years in the history of our country,” he said to cheers.
There are unusual tensions and fears of violence or Trump’s refusal to acknowledge the results if he loses, as he continues to do after his loss in 2020 to Joe Biden.
Harris said nbc Her campaign was “of course” prepared for a scenario in which Trump would prematurely declare victory during a vote-counting process that could take days to complete.
Biden, a rare presence on the Harris campaign, took a jab at Trump on Tuesday by paraphrasing the former president’s notorious anti-Hillary Clinton chant as “Lock her up.”
On a visit to New Hampshire, Biden told a small crowd of people: “We have to lock up” Trump — quickly adding, “Lock him up politically.”
With Trump facing several pending criminal charges as he competes against Harris to succeed Biden, the White House has been very careful not to get involved in the Republican’s legal troubles.
