An earthquake destroys buildings in eastern Türkiye and shakes Syria – Newsad

Istanbul: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s eastern Malatya province on Wednesday, causing damage to some buildings but no casualties, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told reporters that three buildings partially collapsed, but there were no casualties.

The official Syrian news agency reported that residents of Hasakah, Deir ez-Zor and Aleppo governorates also felt the earthquake.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Department said that the earthquake occurred at 10:46 a.m. (0746 GMT) and its epicenter was in the Kali district, about 40 kilometers east of the city of Malatya.

She added that the Disaster and Emergency Management Department, police and gendarmerie security teams conducted inspections throughout the region including Diyarbakir, Sanliurfa, Elazig, Batman and Tunceli provinces.

Yerlikaya said that nearly 190 people were treated in hospitals in six provinces due to the earthquake, and 43 of them were still under observation.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center said that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 6.1 and was at a depth of nine kilometers underground.
