PARIS—Wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan missed out on a medal in the men’s 400-meter T52 event early Saturday morning in the 17th Paralympic Games held at the sprawling Stade de France.

Racing under a cold drizzle and slippery conditions, Mangliwan finished eighth in the final won by world champion and record holder Maxime Carabin of Belgium.

Mangliwan, on his third consecutive Paralympics, arrived at the line in one minute and 4.55 seconds, slightly faster than his qualifying time of 1:05.79 during the morning heats.

Cutting loose halfway through the race, Carabin validated his worth by clocking 55.10 seconds for the gold medal, prying the crown loose from defending champion Tomoki Sato of Japan.

The 23-year-old former handball player from Antwerp earlier reset the Paralympic record with a 54.48 performance in the heats.

Sato, a five-time world champion in the event, checked in second with a time of 56.26 seconds while Tomoya Ito completed the podium with a bronze output in 1:01.08.

The 44-year-old Mangliwan, the 2023 Asian Para Games gold medalist, tries to redeem himself in the men’s 100m T52 on Sept. 5 by aiming to qualify for the final set the following day.

Mangliwan will again be ranged against Carabin, Sato and Tomoya in the 100m where he won a silver medal last year in the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.
